calculation : Intuition : : Logic/rationale : Faith
This is another "thoughtlet" that just sprung out of nowhere in my brain...so thought to feed it and grow it in this forum..
One evening, I went to the racquet ball court and the friend who promised could not join me .......So I was all to myself playing in the court (that s a good thing about this game .. u can play for urself ... like playing a 1 membered game with a comp :) ) I was trying to hit shots in a very calculated way.. I mean as I observed from others....and after certain point of time, my brain was tired to be conscious and calculate...however, the shots went as per "calculation". I just started thinking about it as I was playing...
Think about this... When you are typing on ur keyboard, you wud have initially taken lot of care and later a little bit and actually when you are tensed or when u r so desperate to type fast or send a mail.. your mind focusing on some other thing.. u type without having to look at the keyboard even once... so actually ur brain is seeing here and not ur eyes... similarly many examples...
So I was trying to relate this with intuition. According to me, intuition is " Perceiving the external inputs and reacting to them with your brain by "actually" not being conscious of them through your sensory organs or by brain itself" ( makes sense??? :)) .
Lemme relate this with the concept of logic Vs Faith. Logic to me is a step-by-step process of analysing a situation/problem/confusion/concept and then trying to tackle it with the best possible way, based out of past experience or knowledge. Logic can be defined or rather is a concept that is alive when brain is conscious or when we are making the brain to be conscious. This, I think arose out of human's innate want of reducing the probability of failure.
Where as Faith is belief or an uncalculated conclusion of the same situation/problem/confusion/concept. Atleast, this is what is commonly agreed definition of Faith. However, I feel that Faith ( excluding religion over which we do not have any choice) evolves out of many previos calculations or logical arguments. Now that we do not want the brain to just follow the repetitive process of logic or rationale to solve certain situation or confusion.
Similarly, I think intuition is not just a game of blind chance. People who do things out of intuition and cannot conceptualise or reason out their decisions, are actually, not acting at their whim. They are acting out of their experience or to be precise, the pattern to which their brain can perform those similar calculations in fraction of second and deliver the output. I think this whole concept is precisely told in the adage "Practice makes a man perfect". You are perfect when you act out of intuition and no more waste your time in consciously analysing the situtation. However, to reach a stage where in you act out of intuition, you need to train your brain by taking calculated steps initially and then blindly believe your brain and just stop thinking. Intuition comes into play only when we stop thinking, and to stop thinking, our brain needs to have the pattern set.
Hope it made sense :)

There was this interview with Viswanathan Anand where he was asked about how he is able to make his moves so fast. He replied that generally the first move that came to his mind after the opponent had completed his move was the best one.And more often than not he went by it.
But you see intuition is something we develop subconsciously with practice. If i play chess, i am sure the first move that comes to my mind would be a disaster (not that the subsequent ones would be any better) and thats because I have not practised the game enough.
There is absolutely no substitute for those hours spent grappling with the game (or problems).
